It isn't necessarily a remarkable piece of music. It's just good.

But the lyrics are moving. It's hard not to cry as I listen to the despair that this character experiences. On Friday I was in Fort Wayne, Indiana waiting for my dad to finish his meetings. I was aimlessly driving around and stumbled across a firefighter's museum. Of course I went in. It was a pretty cool place located inside an old firehouse.

The one thing that struck me more than anything else, and perhaps more than anything in a long while, was the story of Billy Cruthers. Billy was an 8 year old boy who contracted polio back in the day. Like many others, he needed the help of an iron lung. The Fort Wayne Fire Department took the task of dealing with iron lungs in the city, which was especially brave since no one yet knew how the disease spread. So the firefighters helped Billy with his too. They became his friend. They helped him with the iron lung, and did many other things for him, and they even stopped by just to see their friend Billy. When he graduated high school, his graduation cards failed to be printed, so the firefighters went to his house and climbed the roof to announce via a bullhorn that Billy had graduated.

But the saddest thing about it was that Billy never recovered. He spent 17 years almost exclusively isolated to that machine. And then he died at 24, just slightly older than me.

I am amazed that Billy graduated high school, even though he was stuck in that thing. And that was when high school was hard. Or harder, anyway.

Uganda

Heading to Uganda again this Thursday. Uganda and the Georgia Fire Academy still loom ahead of me, and each require much time and effort. I guess summer won't really be here for me until July. Hopefully I can start window washing then. Perhaps another glorious summer at the University of Arkansas awaits me. Washing windows all day under the hot sun. But I actually do enjoy the job, somewhat.

Today is my dad's 53rd birthday. I wonder what it's like to be 53. I have come to love the forms because they explain the particular event so clearly, and have been such a comfort and help to me. I especially love the forms for preparing to take Communion, which we usually read the week before Communion Sunday. It can be hard to listen to the pastor read such a lengthy form, especially after doing it so many times, but I really have come to love them. Here is one of the Communion preparation forms, if you so wish to read.

Preparatory Exhortation
Beloved in Jesus Christ, since we hope next Lord's Day (or: since it is our privilege this day) to celebrate the blessed sacrament of the Lord's Supper, we are called to prepare our hearts by rightly examining ourselves. For the apostle Paul has written: "Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup" (1 Cor. 11:27-28). Let all of us, then, examine our lives and, considering our own sin and the wrath of God on it, be sure that we humble ourselves in repentance before God.

Let us examine our hearts to be sure that we trust in Jesus Christ alone for our salvation, and that we believe our sins are forgiven wholly by grace, for the sake of our Lord's sacrifice on the cross.

Finally, let us examine our consciences to be sure that we resolve to live in faith and obedience before our Lord, and in love and peace with our neighbors.

God will surely receive at the table of his Son all who truly repent of their sins, believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior, and desire to do his will. All those, however, who do not repent, who do not put their trust in the Lord Jesus, and who have no desire to lead a godly life, are warned, according to the command of God, to keep themselves from the holy sacrament. If we are living in disobedience to Christ and in enmity with our neighbors, we must repent of our sin and reconcile ourselves to our neighbors before we come to the Lord's table. For if we partake of the sacrament in unbelief and willful disobedience, we eat and drink judgment to ourselves.

This solemn warning is not designed, however, to discourage penitent sinners from coming to the holy sacrament. We do not come to the supper as though we were righteous in ourselves but rather to testify that we are sinners and that we look to Jesus Christ for our salvation. Although we do not have perfect faith and do not serve and love God with all our hearts, and though we do not love our neighbors as we ought, we are confident that the Savior accepts us at his table when we come in humble faith, with sorrow for our sins, and with a will to follow him as he commands.*

[And since it is necessary for us to come to the sacrament in good conscience, we urge any who lack this confidence to seek from the minister or any elder of this church such counsel as may quiet their consciences or lead to the conversion of their lives.]

All, then, who are truly sorry for their sins, who sincerely believe in the Lord Jesus as their Savior, and who earnestly desire to lead a godly life, ought to accept the invitation now given and come with gladness to the table of their Lord. That we may rightly examine ourselves before God, let us seek his gracious help through prayer.

Almighty God, who has given us the gospel of Jesus Christ, and who has provided a most wonderful communion with him through the mystery of the sacrament, we ask you for grace to enable us to prepare our hearts to receive holy communion. To all who sincerely believe in your Son and truly repent of their sins, grant assurance of your gracious readiness to receive and bless them in the supper of their Lord. To all who have not repented and have not put their trust in the Lord Jesus, grant a restraining fear of this supper, lest their condemnation be greater. But have mercy upon these and grant them grace to repent of their sins and seek their salvation in your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

We confess, O Father, that we have all offended your majesty and deserved your judgment. We have transgressed in our thoughts, our words, and our deeds. We are truly weak. Be merciful, O God, and grant us your pardon. And let us come to the sacrament in the joy of your forgiving love.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who, with you and the Holy Spirit, one only God, lives and reigns forever. Amen.

My Year in Review (Final)

I don't want to write about part three of the year. It was really good, though not without its challenges. Basically school happened. Covenant is going well, better than it has in the past. Cross country was really good. Really happy to be back with West Brow Fire & Rescue. So good to be near friends like Scott and Jamie Laslo, Uganda people, and my brother and sister.

New Movies of the Year:

I watched Dogville and Annie Hall, among other movies, with Steve Larsen in Kansas City back in January. That was so much fun. These were probably the best movies I saw this year.

I tried to read a minimum of 10 books related to Christianity this year. I only made it to 7, but I am happy. I've developed the habit :) I strongly recommend Growing Up Christian by Karl Graustien. It is simple and easy to read, and very important and influential for one's faith. If you have never read theology, please begin with this.

But the book I have truly come to love this year is Holiness by JC Ryle. Its topic and elements are basic Christianity. But even more, the elements discussed are necessary for being a Christian. Ryle shows how holiness and sanctification are essential to being a Christian. He shows the real, deep, narrow path that a true Christian must walk. It is not optional, you either are such a Christian or you are not one at all. Hebrews 12:14b says, "without holiness no one will see the Lord." And I place myself first at the line in need of holiness; this book is convicting. Go forth, buy, and read :

http://www.wtsbooks.com/product-exec/product_id/2388/nm/Holiness_Its_Nature_Hindrances_Difficulties_and_Roots_Paperback_

My Year in Review (2)

Uganda through the summer...

Man, what should I say about Uganda. I just completed my cross cultural task here at Covenant, so I spent alot of time thinking and writing about that trip. I don't really want to write down everything I did there either. In general terms, it was a really good trip, though it was difficult. It certainly was a high point of the year, and it has changed me for the better I think. The spiritual fruits in my life are subtle I think, and perhaps slowly developing, but I think (and hope) they are present.

I spent alot of time evangelizing there, and that was good. I wanted it, and needed it. I don't think it is my spiritual gift, but I know I can do it. I really wish I did it here in America, and that can be changed.

I met alot of cool people, Americans and Ugandans, and I still keep in contact with people from both countries.

We got back, and I was sick for a week. Spent the next few weeks doing I don't know what. Readjusting, getting healthy, being a little depressed, confused, and in a surreal daze. 4th of July was good. Spent alot of time at Shawn Vicker's place, which is always nice.

Somewhere around here I realized I wanted to go back to Covenant. The fire academy fell through due to late paperwork on my part, but I am kinda glad. Covenant has been really good this year, and I am getting alot of firefighting preparation here too.

Then I got work with the window washing company again. Overall it was good, though I didn't like traveling all the time. Yet, it made work exciting. It really was kinda fun working all over the U of A campus. I remember spending the hot, muggy evenings running. Such memories.

Then the great backpacking trip with Charlie and Dr. Stevens at Mount Rainier. Such a good trip. Seattle was great too. I really would like to live up there after college. Such a beautifal and exciting place. I'll have to see what God has in store though.

Then Covenant...

A Contrite Repentance

"For You will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise."

In Psalm 51 David does not disparage the Old Testament ceremonies; rather, he reveals how in and of themselves, the blood offered by the priests avails nothing. Without true sorrow for sin, sacrifices would not cover the guilty person's transgression. Likewise, Jesus has not made atonement for those who do not exhibit repentance in their lives (Heb 10:26).

False repentance, attrition, is being is the sorrow we have for the consequences of our sin without being ashamed of violating God's holy standards.

True repentance, contrition, realizes our transgressions are heinous because they violate God's holy character. God will never despise those who express contrition; He forgives all those who repent in humility (Ps 51:17)

If you have a contrite heart you can be assured that you have been forgiven. If you are sorry that you might get caught, you are in danger of having a false repentance. I primarily chose it because it is the first Christian album from a contemporary Christian artist that I've enjoyed in...years. The music is good and the lyrics are good. "Wedding Dress" is a great song about our unfaithfulness to God; "Lover" is a great song sung from the perspective of Christ; and "She Must and Shall Go Free" is a great song about the church and how Christ has freed us from the debt of our sin. I also liked "Crooked Deep Down" in part because the music sounds kinda like it could have come out of Sun Studio back in the day. I don't like the music from his last two albums, though the lyrics are still good. Ha ha, "I don't listen to the music dad, I just listen to the lyrics." Anyways...

Other good albums I bought this year:
Bill Mallonee: Yonder Shines the Infant Light
Vigilantes of Love: Killing Floor
Bob Dylan: Nashville Skyline

My Year in Review (1)

I am working on a paper right now and it is slow going. Therefore, it is a good time to update this thing. I haven't really written much this semester, but that's ok because I don't think people really read it.

I thought I would enjoy writing a several part series reflecting back on this past year. If nothing else, I will enjoy reflecting on all that happened this year. In a general sense, it has been a good year. I can easily divide the year into three periods: the first contains everything from the New Year to Uganda, the second contains Uganda and the summer, and the third contains the fall semester to the end of the year.

The year started out uncertain. I wasn't in school anymore, and I still didn't have a job. But shortly after the New Year I began working with Steve Larsen. I traveled to Kansas City each week to assist him, and to do some construction work. It was interesting, and I fondly remember my time in KC. It was fun to learn about the city, to see new sights, and to get to know Steve better. And the food and drink...amazing.

In February I started working with my neighbor, Peter, at his physical therapy office. At first the job was interesting, but it quickly became slow and frustrating. I didn't have much to do there, and the days dragged on. I enjoyed being home, but I already missed school and people. I visited Denver at Mizzou a few times, which was fun.

Eventually it came time to head for Uganda. I was pretty nervous. I had struggled, off and on, with doubt and worry about the trip the whole year. I headed to Scott and Jamie's house a few days before the trip, and enjoyed my time with them. Then came the day to leave...

November

Yep. G's old pastorate. I was really excited about going there, and up to that Sunday morning I was unusually comfortable about going. Sunday morning my struggle with anxiety kicked in and I was pretty nervous about going to a new church, though still excited. Charlie and I did not have very formal clothing since we just came off Mt. Rainier, and we knew we would stand out in a dutch reformed church. We drove by it first since we were pretty early and we saw people walking up in pretty formal clothing. That made us more nervous, but we had a good time laughing about our situation. When we pulled into the parking lot and got out Charlie pointed to this little "poster" dutch child wearing knickers, dress shirt, and full tie. It was so funny; Charlie lost it and had to take a minute to laugh it all out, but you probably had to be there. Of course we go in and the place is full, so an usher leads us to the very front row, which was the last thing we wanted. Unfortunately we didn't talk to many people, but we met a few high school/college students. And the worship was so refreshing and the sermon was powerful. Why not listen to it here:

http://www.lyndenurc.com/Audio/Abounding%20Grace%20Lyndn%208-26.mp3

U2 on the Simpsons

I'm addicted to these online videos. Though much of what he writes is pretty basic, I still love it. It primarily targets Christian teenagers, though it applies to anyone who has grown up in a Christian environment (but even those who didn't still benefit from it). It addresses many issues I struggled with (and struggle with), and I really, really wish I could have read it when I was a freshman in high school. Back then I really struggled with my faith, primarily because I don't think I was a Christian then. Though I claimed to be, I didn't understand the Gospel, at all. But if I had read this book then, maybe God could have gotten the message through to me. So if any of you want to borrow it, let me know.

The Last Stop

Almost there. I was about 11 or 12 when it was around, and I was obsessed with it. It was about this Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman who had to work in Chicago with an interesting and amusing Chicago detective. The show had a great impact on me. It aroused in me the most unusual childhood career fantasy. I wanted to grow up and move to Canada and become a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. That was my American dream...to become a Canadian citizen. That phase lasted for quite a long time actually. I still haven't grown out of it. Once I finish college I still plan to do it. No, not really.

I found the series on dvd at Best Buy recently, so I got it for my b-day. Oh, how I enjoy re-watching the long forgotten episodes. The music is actually good, and I even found some of it on iTunes.

So there is a seldom mentioned piece of my childhood for everyone in the world to see.

Hey, I just remembered how last summer I went to Canada for the first time. When we went to the Boundary Waters we crossed the border for a little while. That was my first time out of the US.

Thanksgiving Ahoy!

Less than a week until we leave, Lord willing! This time Makoto is coming back with us, along with the much anticipated Erik O'Dell. It should be fun, though the house will be crowded with Mr. and Miss Simon staying there as well.

I have two major tasks I'm trying to accomplish before the break. The first is to read a 400 page book on the Civil War in American memory for this first 50 post war years. Of course, a paper is attached to it. I actually really enjoy studying the Civil War in American memory. I read a book called Confederates in the Attic last semester for a history class, and that re-kindled my interest in the Civil War. So this assignment, while somewhat substantial, should be interesting.

The second task is to complete an open book Apologetics test. It is also a group test, so I only have to answer one substantial question. Our group does have to discuss it all quite thoroughly though. This particular section of the course has been brutal. It has been on the history of apologetics/philosophy, and my head wants to explode. Philosophy is definitely a weak point of mine. After the break we have a 75 minute presentation to do on Open Theism. 45 minutes to present, and 30 minutes Q&A. Aaaaarrghhh!!!

Funny, I didn't think I had anything to say for this blog.

Charlie and the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup

Charlie ate a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup over the weekend. I gave it to him while we watched the Princess Bride with Meghan. Charlie would like another Reeses Peanut Butter Cup.

I've decided not to come back to Covenant. I really don't enjoy my time here, and I'm paying more money for a less usable degree. I really don't want to do anything with a history degree anyway, but at this point it is the only degree I care to pursue. Besides, I've taken so many courses within the history field by this point I should stick with it. At SMS or MSU or whatever it is now, I can get a history degree with a teachers certificate, and I can complete ROTC. I wouldn't mind exploring teaching history at the high school level, but that is about it in terms of a history degree. ROTC is the top priority, so I will see where that goes. History is a good, broad degree for many careers; the problem is that there is no shortage of history degrees these days, and a general history degree requires much graduate work. I don't really want to go to grad school right away.

Anyway, that is why I came back to Springfield over the weekend. I talked to my dad and Pastor Grotenhuis, and I went to MSU to handle matters there. I liked SMS, and it wasn't easy for me to leave. After I made my decision I wrestled with it for the remainder of my time at SMS. Covenant didn't fit me very well, and so I shall return.

Too bad I have to finish up the rest of this semester. It has been quite challenging. Much left to do. This week is busy.

The Weekend

Friday,

Mark Shaw and I took a walk to the beautifal bluffs near Covenant. Countin' down the days until fall break (10 days). Erik O'Dell will return with Matt and I, and this time Dan is coming as well. Dan is another transfer student I met last semester. Dan accepted my offer to come home at dinner. Eventually he looked at his food, threw his fork into his plate, and said he was sick of this (the food). He looked at me and seriously asked, your mom is a good cook, right? Mom and Meghan better be prepared to live up to high expectations. Erik is quite excited at seeing Charlie again, but he is so disappointed that Denver will not be there.

What to say. Not much to say, not much to say...(DMB).

Ooooh...I could write about the U2 concert I saw in May. I don't think I ever shared that before. Chreeha might like it. It was very cool. Erik and I were on the second level at an angle behind the stage. Aside from staring at backsides the whole night, these were great seats. We had a close up birds eye view of the stage, which was especially cool since we got to see Larry's drumming. Normally you cannot see the drums that well from up front-right Chreeha? Bono and Adam paid attention to the people behind the stage-although Edge didn't. It was so loud. Several times the noise got so loud that my hearing suddenly went real low. It got so loud that it wasn't loud-weird. They played so many cool songs, but one of the best was a new song called love and peace or else. Larry actually assisted with vocals, and Bono played a drum for awhile.

Blah.

He Exists!

This morning I was walking down the hallway of the main building when I heard a door behind me close. I turned around and...lo and behold...there stood RC Sproul. I think he just came out of the bathroom, and he was by himself, walking my way! At first I only waved, but then for some reason I froze dead in my tracks and turned around. This was my one shot at meeting the man, nay, legend. So I walked toward him...he walked toward me. We intersected. "So nice to meet you...appreciate your ministry..." Handshake. He actually talked to me man. With a friendly smile and joyful demeanor he said..."could you please find me some toilet paper?" No, not really. He said nice to meet you, but with said demeanor.

Order Up

Friday night I joined (upon invite) Erik and his hall for dinner at Sticky Fingers. It was tasty. Later Erik, Dan, and two other guys I didn't know went to see Batman. It was a good movie, but really a one time view. Interestingly, as we drove down there was a police blockade near school. They told us they were checking driver's licenses, which they did. Me thinks they were looking for something or someone, but maybe they were just that bored.

I am staying very, very busy with school.

I have really started to enjoy the music of the Irish Tenors. I have actually found a classical genre I like.

Lord willing, I will return to Springfield in 3 weeks.

Today I read, went to Wal Mart, did laundry, cleaned the very gross and dirty bathroom, and went running.

We have this Wed off for a day of prayer. They have various prayer sessions throughout the day, but you are not obligated to attend any. I will certainly try to participate in some. Matt's b-day is that day as well, so maybe we will think up something for him.

That's all for now.

9/11

Well great, I just wrote a considerable post and lost it thanks to Covenant's great internet security system. Remember kids, log in every 2 minutes for extra special security!

I thought it would be interesting to hear from everyone their memories from 9/11/01/. Where were you, what were you thinking, etc..

I was only 2 or 3 weeks in to my first year at Kickapoo. I was in my first block gym class. We went across the streets to the Gilenwaters tennis complex when the announcement came over the PA. However, our hard of hearing gym prof thought the message had to do with students leaving their lunch trays in the courtyard. Only after we came inside did we discover the truth. We watched the events on tv until second block. That was when the principal decided that school would not be dismisssed early, and that we should all go back to schoolwork. I'm still not happy about that decision. I don't remember fully comprehending what was happening, I just knew it was big. The day went on about as usual, with the exception of wondering what was happening and why we were not getting to know. Life in Springfield never seemed to change much after 9/11. Security didn't really seem to tighten up, and life seemed to stay the same. Obviously in the broader sense things were changing and have changed.

Last night Makoto (my roommate) and I watched a first hand video account of 9/11 recorded by two brothers who were with the fire dept during the entire event. They were inside the towers as the events unfolded. You may remember it from tv a few years ago. It is still hard to comprehend.

Well...

Due to popular demand, the blog is back. I also enjoy Cultural Heritage of the West with Dr. Dennison. We have been looking at worldviews. Very interesting; very challenging. We talked about responding to the culture in light of our relationship to Christ. Very interesting/important. History of China/Japan-very good-outstanding prof. Civil War-fun-small class. He won't be talking much these next few months, but he hopes to be back up and running by late August.

Today was hall cleaning day. What a day. So much cleaning. I'm tired. Most of my stuff is packed and waiting. I have to live out of my suitcase for the next few days.

I was off campus for a good portion of Friday. The day began at ye olde Greyfriars with some studying. I ate lunch downtown, and then I walked around and took a few pics. I took a pic of Greyfriars. I spent so much time there that it was worth a pic. I went into a used bookstore. Lot of books there. I bought one for $4. It is a history book by William Manchester. It is titled The Glory and the Dream. I bought it b/c Mallonee wrote a song or two based on it. But I like history, and I'm interested in it. But mostly b/c of Mallonee.

Later that evening Scott and I went back down the mtn. to get bagels for hall cleaning day. We ate dinner at Panera. It was so much better than the food here. So refreshing. We ran into Greg and Robin downtown. They had gone out to eat, and Addie was there too. Apparently it wasn't so great b/c of Addie. Small child and such.... We talked for a minute; nothing serious.

The blog may speak once more, but if not...

BLOG

Hello

Saturday afternoon one other guy, another girl, and myself went to a small art exhibit downtown. It is required for the art and music class. It took us forever to find it, and we arrived just as it was closing. The lady who was in charge was kind and let us roam for about 20 minutes, despite closing time. She is a Covenant grad. Later that evening I watched Red Dragon with other people. It was entertaining.

Friday night I watched the Green Berets. It was refreshing. I had never watched it fully through. There was a thunderstorm that evening. I hadn't seen hail in years. Yesterday and today has been cold. I heard there was some snow mixed in with the rain. Wow. Snow in Georgia in April. Of course there was nothing significant. I didn't even see any.

I spent about two hours Friday afternoon in Greyfriars studying. Every day three or four older guys come in and play chess with each other after work. So I watched the history channel instead of reading my history book.

Last Night...

Last night I went to a recital here on campus. I went to this little coffee place right at the edge of downtown. It was closing just as I got there, but I was able to get some coffee and sit at the tables on the sidewalk. It was very nice. The weather was great, and the area was reasonably quiet aside from the traffic. I've gone downtown almost everyday this week. I'm getting tired of being cramped up on the mountain. Last night I went to Greyfriars (the coffee shop where Bud worked) with another guy named Josh. We walked around downtown as well. It was pleasant.

The weather is finally getting nice. The trees and flowers and such are all starting to bloom.

One more Bill show coming up in Athens again. Next Friday. I may or may not go. So far no one else can or wants to go. Still thinking this one. Will play it by ear. The campus is a desolate place right now because of Easter Break. There is hardly anyone here. I spent most of yesterday in downtown Chattanooga with mom and dad. I really like the downtown. We were going to go to the aquarium, but it was packed. We walked around for awhile and had lunch. Tomorrow afternoon, Lord willing, Eric and I will go over to Greg and Robins' for lunch. They have invited 40 people. Hmmm. Big crowd of strangers. Fun. 5 more weeks until the end of semester. Yay. That's all for now. The blog has to slowly digest his food since he has been gone for so long.

The Blog is Going on Break

The blog has decided to go on break, but he should be back in about a week. He couldn't come because he had a philosophy conference to attend. Philosophy major, blah. Thomas, the Marine, is the guy with the distinctly Marine camo pants and black shirt. He is kneeling in the center. He is not the guy in the last pic with the beard and full on army camo. The Marines recently changed their camo outfit. I feel bad because I woke the blog up. He was sleeping peacefully until I knocked over a book. He woke up and yelled at me. Now, to appease him, I have to write something. European history...they should learn from the US and make their history interesting. No, no, I kid. It can be interesting, at least for some historians. It isn't so appealing during tests, papers, and deadlines. Much more enjoyable when it is desired. It also doesn't look too great at 3 am. I wonder if anyone else reads this blog. Anyone could stumble across this blog and read it. Hey, maybe someone from Europe is reading it. Haw...I wonder how he/she feels about European history. Maybe they dislike it too! Or maybe (and much more likely) they hate US history.

It snowed a bit here last night. Nothing significant. It is really just cold. Miserably cold. I don't want to get up and give out parking tickets at 7 am in this cold weather tomorrow. I may skip. I'm tired anyway. I've missed 4 or 5 days already. 4 due to the weather, 1 to a sore throat. I know I can miss b/c of rain and such. I may offer to work a little "overtime" to make up for it. Bob Hoekstra called me this evening. Basically just chatting. Nice to here from him. Enjoy digesting the 3 am blog. My, my, the blog is getting so fat on comments. I've never seen the blog swallow so many comments at once. His stomach almost exploded.

Last night only Scott (the RA and my suitemate) and I went to the coffee shop. We studied for quite awhile and then went to a movie. We saw Clint Eastwood's movie "Million Dollar Baby." It is really hard to decide whether or not I recommend it. On the one hand it was interesting and well made. It kept my interest and there was a big twist at the end. However, that twist is quite controversial, and I'm not sure if the movie is edifying. Scott really brought this to my attention. He came out saying he wasn't exactly edified by the movie, and we both agreed it was depressing. The course of action taken in the end of the movie was sinful, but it wasn't like a gross image or such that instantly disqualifies the movie from viewing. I'll leave it up to y'all to decide whether or not to see it.

Paintball was fun. I hit people and they hit me. Our hall beat the other hall. The course was pretty nice. It was out in the woods.

It has been fun seeing Chreeha trying to figure out the mystery. Keep at it Sherlock. Another weekend just around the corner. Yay. Break comin' up fast. Double yay. It looks like I will be playing paintball on Sat. morning. I can't afford to play for long. Much to do. I still remember how much it hurts getting shot. Boo. I think the course is nice. Still...it hurts. I think I may be going to a coffee shop tomorrow night to study with a few other people; hopefully no more than 4 other people. Also, I am hopeful, if you get my drift. (Only the family will get that one).

Well, I'm finished with my chores, so Lafanduh and I are going out for some prime rib. It is a good thing no one else knew or wanted to come b/c the truck was full. It was a refreshing change of pace to eat real food. It is always nice to get away from campus for awhile. This afternoon two other guys and I returned to the battlefield. It was alright. The museum part was cool. They had a massive collection of antique guns. The battlefield itself was borderline dull I'm sad to say. It was scenic and pretty, but one can only take so many monuments and plaques. How was everyone's weekend? I understand that there is a church dinner at our house tomorrow. Let me know how it goes and who comes. I can naturally assume the Kerrs' will be there. God willing I should be able to enjoy 2 Sundays at home during spring break. We get one full week and that following Monday. That extra day is especially nice for those who have a long drive; I imagine that is why they included it.

If a Blog is Written in the Woods...

...does it get read?

One more day till the weekend. Apparently it has been hidden away for years. Mr. Steinbeck wrote it when he was incredibly depressed and drinking heavily; he almost died several times from his drinking. It was for this reason that he titled the manuscript "The Wrath of Grapes."

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! Bill told that one at last weeks concert. It was pretty well a dud. He then said that some deaths are on purpose.

I recommend seeing the movie "To End all Wars." It is somewhat bloody at times, and a bit of a slow start, but it is really worth it. It has amazing parallels to Christ and what He did for us. A moving film. I'm sure most of you have heard of it.

Blaaaaag

Well, the middle of the week is near. I may return to the Civil War battlefield this Sat. We didn't see all of it last time. Another guy in the "group" enlisted in the Army and is interested in this kind of stuff. He is going to basic at Ft. Leonard Wood this summer. It looks like my roommate will be coming home with me on spring break. He is from California and can't afford to fly back there for one week. I wish I had more time/desire for pleasure reading. I still need to finish General Frank's book, and now I want to read Dylan's autobiography. I was moving at a rapid pace on Frank's book until I needed it as a source in a paper last semester. Circumstances were such that I needed to put it on hold. I wanted to finish it over Christmas break, but that didn't happen. I opened it up once here. Want to finish it...

The Brief Blog

Went to church twice. There was a visitor from Oregon who was showing his son the campus and presenting a lecture tomorrow. He has been here before, but his son hadn't. I was tired and needed to catch up on sleep. I did some studying. I went to a local Civil War battlefield with a few other people at 3. We got back at 5. The battlefield was pretty neat; very similar to Wilson's Creek. This place had more monuments and plaques, however. A lot of walking. We only saw part of it. Bigger than Wilson's Creek I believe. Had dinner. Need to study. Maybe do something else. Not sure.

Apparently our head cook left. From what I hear he was responsible for improving the food quality here. I hope the quality doesn't go down. It seems I get alot of fried food here. I've never had so many country fried steaks/veal/shrimp/chicken. There is some variety, but compared to the quantity of fried food I had back home this is alot.

Back to the OPC church tomorrow. I think I may continue to go there. Last week was the first Sunday I haven't had communion since I've arrived here. I think I'm 4/5 now. That is alot of communion-not that it's a bad thing. I like the once a month. Quarterly is too long, weekly is too much. I know it is not regulated in the Bible, but once a month seems about right to me.

Mr. Blog

I really cannot identify the anonymous posters on this blog? Plus, they need to explain the request for a new cd from Bill.

The weekend is upon us. Only three more weeks till spring break. Three busy weeks. Study tomorrow. I have to go to the public library soon to look for some material for a paper. Our library does not have enough on my topic, and no, I still haven't gone in there yet. I looked through Covenant's online database of materials and they didn't have what I need. My paper is for history of political theory. I chose to write on Carl Von Clausewitz and his book "On War". He was a pretty significant strategist, and his theories are still widely considered today. Rough paper to write though; at least I think it will be. Big paper. Blah.

I don't think I ever announced it via the blog, but my roommate and I landed some U2 tickets for the concert in Chicago. Not floor tickets sad to say. We are halfway up and behind the stage. They should actually be good seats though. Better than 1/2 mile out and all the way up. They were reasonably affordable though. Yay.

There were three b-days on my hall this week so tonight we are going for pizza at the bottom of the mtn. The drive wasn't too bad. 3.5 hours there, 2.5 back. It didn't feel that bad, at least not coming back. I drove there, the other guy (Thomas) drove back. Thomas had never seen a VOL show before, but his friends had told him that Bill and his shows were really good. Thomas said he figured he would be a little disappointed with the show b/c he had such high expectations, but in the end he actually was satisfied beyond expectation. At the end of the show Thomas and I talked to Bill for a few minutes. We talked about Covenant a little, and b/c we were from Covenant and had traveled such a far distance he gave each of us a free t-shirt. Awww yeah...

The bar was actually a nice one. It had more of a coffee shop look to it. It was split into two rooms: the bar itself and a performance room. We got there around 8 expecting Bill to start at 8:30. He actually didn't start until just after 9. It ended around 10:45. He had only one other guy performing with him. I don't know who this guy was; he played another guitar and lap steel. Bill stuck with the acoustic guitar and harmonica. His harmonica performance was amazing last night. Nothing Like a Train was spectacular. He played quite a few songs from his new release, as well as a few new unreleased songs. He talked alot as well. He told stories, jokes, etc. He recorded the concert last night, but I don't know what he plans to do with it. Maybe a new live release some day? That would be cool...to say that I was in attendance for this live recording.

I'm sure I could say more, and I might later, but I need to go. I have a prayer meeting in 10 minutes. And, of course, schoolwork still keeps nagging me.

Set List for Bill's show in Athens

There is much to say about last night, but for now I will quickly post the set list. Bill is supposed to play 2 sets that night! Twice the Bill with half the fat. The drive will be long though. I think 3 hours. Well worth it, and at least the other guy is going.

The Blog is satisfied with 4 comments, but his appetite is big. He will get hungry fast. I saw a hilarious episode of Family Guy where Peter turns his house into a puppet (it was one of those brief yet gut busting side notes of the show; ie this was not the plot). The attic portion of the house moved up and down like a mouth. Peter was inside using the controls and talking for the house. The funniest thing he said was something like, "Behold I am hungry! Bring me a toolshed to appease my appetite." Very funny; funnier if you see it.

So much to do...

The Lonely Blog

The Blog is sad. Today in chapel we had an amazing guest musician. Dr. David Oliver performed on the organ. He is very talented. I am about to leave for a concert of his here on campus; I don't expect a huge turnout of students though. Tomorrow I need to study alot. No other plans yet. I just need to focus on the studies. In response to a comment, my drink was not a breach of contract here. It is permissable with a parent, though I could not return to campus for the evening as part of the rules. Can't say I like the rules. In some ways I could agree, but I think there are other reasonable circumstances they should allow for.

Ah...Ahh...Blogchoooo!!!

What to say in the blog today. It is more than a day off, but less than a schoolday. It really seems to be a day off though. No one is required to do anything. For lunch I went with my suitemate (not roommate) and another guy from the hall to a place downtown called Sticky Fingers. It is a BBQ place, and it is pretty good. It was nice to have real food for a change. I also got to see downtown, which is actually five minutes from the bottom of the mountain. No highway travel or anything. We passed the public library which looked nice. I think I will be able to study well there. It is hard to study here. I have not checked out our library yet. It looks a little small, but it may be nice. I simply have not gone in yet. But the one downtown looks nice. Plus I was able to see the coffee shop that Bud worked in. It looks nice, and it is suppose to be really good. One week and one day from the next VOL concert. I told the Marine guy again, and I think he is set on going. I still need to verify some things before it happens. God willing it will work out though. It is weird not having a tv here. I feel disconnected from the world. Not so much that I miss silly shows, but simply having the news. I look at the Fox news website, but it isn't the same. I usually only here brief portions of big stories. Plus I don't here about new movies coming out. Any good ones I should know?

The Midnight Run of the Blog Express

I purchased U2 tickets today. Thursday, May 12, at the United Center in Chicago. About half way up and behind the stage. Actually, I don't think they are bad seats. But Eric and I are working on finding better ones through ebay. Almost as soon as tickets went on sale, they sold out. They added two more shows for the week, and yet they still sold out fast. These were the best offered, and it was a good thing we took them. Otherwise we would be out of the show. Many people bought the good tickets and turned around to sell them for a profit. Now they are on ebay at outrageous prices. One guy is trying to pull 1500 for two, but the average for two has been about 500. We won't go that high. We would like to get tickets for the floor, but at least we have these two already. Our suitemate is from Chicago, and he will be there for a day or two. We might hang out for a day with him. He is really busy though. He also proposed to his girlfriend today. Everything is coated with ice here. Very messy, very slippery. The food was basically horrible today. I think they had to use whatever was left in the kitchen. Not very tasty.

Blog, Lettuce, and Tomato

It is getting icy here. I went to the grocery store with another guy from the hall. I got back late, and therefore missed the concert. I am disappointed b/c now I will have to wait and see another. Plus, I will likely have to pay for one and see it in the city. But maybe another one will pop up. I'm not sure what will happen tonight. Several options open, and waiting to see what unfolds. God willing, we will get the u2 tickets in the morning. There is a floor limit of 2, so Eric and I will each have to buy 2. Jeremy Veldman might come; still awaiting his decision. He said he would get back to me today. What is going on there this weekend? No dancing river...what will you do? One more day of classes before weekend. Going to a string quartet tomorrow night here on campus. I'm going as a requirement for art and music class. Blah. Then I need to write a paper on it as well as on that VOL concert I went to. Next Tuesday is a day of prayer, so no classes. It is a day off of sorts, but really it is a day of prayer. This will be a short blog since I can't think of much more to say. Still no package...did someone eat my cookies. I have some free time before dinner to either work or play. I saw that cat again today. Tried to pet him, but he was afraid. Still miss the boyz. Not much I can think of to say. Probably will call later. Are the hamsters still living? Does mom retreat to my bedroom when dad is home? Still no package. The cookies are exciting I suppose, but not as exciting as last package. I have alot of reading to do. Still enjoying VOL dvd. I might see him in concert again two weeks from today. He will be playing in Athens, GA, his hometown. Time is still TBA, so I'll have to see. Athens is approx. 3 hours away, but it would be worth seeing Bill in his hometown. I'll have to get more info to make sure the trip is worthwhile. It is at a bar again, but I hope they will let under age people in for concerts. I think some places do. I didn't have my id checked last time in Nashville, so maybe I could have gotten some people in. A large group of younger looking kids would have attracted attention though, and I don't want to drive three hours to be turned away. Matt, Charlie, and I already did that once for Bill. Not much fun. Talk to you later.

Oh, I can't believe Matt's story. I went to SMS for 1 1/2 years and never got such a request. He was off campus and still got a request from a random stranger. It was a small group. I was so tired and out of it. I got back at 7:30 and went to sleep. I had to get up at 10:30 after that. Those three hours were incredibly deep sleep. I woke up again in a haze. I didn't fall asleep till 2 or so last night, so that made it worse.

On my way back to the dorm, I found a cat hunting stuff in a trash can. He was messing around with a foil pan I think. He was scared of me, but didn't run away. I tried to pet him, but he was to scared. Plus, almost as soon as I bent down to pet the cat, another guy came out of the dorm. He kind of laughed, and I instantly started to go inside. I heard him say hi to the cat though. Maybe he thought the cat was funny, or maybe he thought it was funny that I was greeting it. I hope to see it again, and pet it. But it didn't have a coller, so maybe he isn't safe. I had not seen this one before. He makes three total.

Thankfully, my classes are done for today. I don't like long days. The music side of the art and music class is interesting. The problem is that it holds a low priority compared to the other classes I have. New Testament and three history classes are more important. Plus, I don't know much about music, and I fear that we are required to understand alot of the musical ideas such as tempo, time, rythem, etc. Boo. I still want to learn my guitar, and this info is useful, but it is bad timing. Bye.

U2 Excitement

Today U2 announced the dates for their upcoming tour. They actually don't have many US cities listed. Maybe more to come? Otherwise, it will be very limited. The closest show to MO is in Chicago on May 7 and 9. As of now, my roomate and I are planning to come back home when semester ends on May 4. God willing we will travel to Chicago on Sunday, May 8 and see them on Monday, May 9. The saturday show would be crazy. Monday better. Meghan's birthday! Hmmmm. Me see what Megwhich opinion is. My roomate is a bigger U2 fan than I am. He is from California, and the tour starts there at the end of March. Obviously, he can't be there for those shows, so he is going to come with me. That is the tenative plan so far. Feedback?

I gave out 8 parking tickets today and 5 last friday. 8 is a record. I had salmon and pork for dinner. It was good. I looked through it. First I saw a picture of VOL performing here on campus. I liked seeing that pic. But here is the bigger and better news. I found multiple pictures of Jeff and Micah Bennet. It was fun to see them back in the day, although Jeff didn't look a whole lot different. I had trouble finding Micah b/c she wasn't Mrs. Bennet then, and I didn't know her maiden name. She looks alot like Megan Huslig.
My stuff came, but when I don't know. I picked it up at 1:30. I haven't watched it yet. Where were the promised cookies?? Does anyone love me? And NutMeg just stays home all day faking illnesses.

Twosdaye

I almost didn't report this evening. There hasn't been much to report these last few days. If these mediocre blogs still interest everyone, please let me know. Otherwise I can cut back from daily blogs.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are my busy days. I have classes from 11-1 and 2-4:45. I hate having the 2-4:45 period. That is a huge block of time taken up by two classes. But M, W, F are my shorter days. Only have classes from 12-1 and 3-4, plus chapel from 11-11:35.

Laundry went ok I suppose. I need to iron a shirt. Yeah. Hooray for the arrival of the dvd. I was willing to let Matt/Meg watch, but I am anxious for it and mom is ready to send it. I wanted to watch it with Matt/Meg anyway. (the vol dvd, that is).

Naughty Megwhich for missing school; the first day of new classes! And Matty? How was day off? Does Matt's boss have a new job lined up, or is he flat out leaving no matter what? Family Video? The Boyz? I assume Matt or Meg will want to watch my dvd when it comes, so I guess that will be ok. Just get it to me fast as can be. I haven't watched it yet, but I've discovered that there is an extra scene in Napolean Dynamite at the end of the credits. Now ya'll have to go get it and watch it. I went to church. Church was ok. Maybe better than OPC, me thinks. Service seemed a little light. I was tired, so maybe I didn't catch much of it. I wish there was a URC church here, b/c of the order and style of worship. The PCA church today was certainly better than something like the E-free church. There were a few modern praise songs mixed in, but they still used the Trinity Hymnal. Well... I miss the boyz. Car rides, huh. I didn't get Slarti's post a few posts back. Something about what would Napolean say? Please clarify. Hum. I played lot of Halo today, and I watched a Futurama. Not what I wanted. I watched Napolean with a few other guys, then I went to town at 3 on my own. I grabbed a little steak and shake b/c I had not eaten yet. That threw off my appetite. I had dinner, watched the Village (which I thought was decent), and hung out with some people for a little while. Now I am back. It is 11, and I haven't been awake for 12 hours yet. I am going to St. Elmo Presbyterian in the morning. I drove by it today. It is a small, old looking building at the bottom of the mountain. Not far; hopefully it will be a small group.

Bill Concert, part two

I was afraid I would not get to meet Bill at all, but by God's grace I did. His wife was selling some of his cds, so I met her for a moment and bought the new album, Dear Life. After buying said album, I saw Bill walking right past me, so I gave him a pat on the back and thanked him, to which he joyfully responded and said that he had fun. Cheesy or not, it was an exciting time for me. I had it built up in my mind that it was impossible to meet people like him, in that he is a musical performer I really like. For instance, I don't expect to ever meet U2 b/c they are so big. But God was gracious in allowing me to be able to meet one of my favorite musicians. It was an exciting time. I hope to see many more concerts.

Bill Concert

Here is the set list, not in exact order.
Nothing Like a train
Goes without saying
Resplendent
Extreme north of the compass
Good Luck Charm
Solar System
It could be alot worse (These songs are all from the album Audible Sigh)
After All this dust settles down
Where the light does fall
High and Lonesome
Who will you love (the last four songs are from the new album Dear Life)

He only played from these two albums, which was kinda disappointing, but still pleasing. I have no background in other history.

Blah,
Mark

If carrots ruled the earth...

...would this post be relevant?

My New Testament class was cancelled on the first day because the prof. was sick. The other classes went smoothly. Lot of reading, lot of writing. I had meatloaf for dinner. It wasn't too bad. Each student has to do some practical service on campus. Three hours a week. M, W, F, i give out parking tickets from 7-8 am. I wasn't forced to do it that early; I chose to. Still no Halo or Futurama.

Today...

My classes will be challenging. I dropped Cultural Heritage of the West because I didn't like it at all. I will have to take it again at some point to graduate, but I will at least look for a different prof. The political theory one will be hard. Big paper attatched to it, plus a presentation. Four more new ones tommorow.

I haven't really had time for Halo or Futurama yet. The food is pretty good. It is healthier than home because I have basically three meals a day with minimal snacking, plus I haven't had any fast food.

I still have a huge pile of books to read even with the dropped class. The campus is very scenic. On sunday, when I was going down the mountain to church, I could see a huge fog on top of the city. It was like looking down on clouds. It was very thick.

End of the Weekend

Today I went to an OPC church with 4 other guys from my hall. One of the guys really reminds me of Jeff Bennett, primarily because of his personality and looks. The church was no bigger than the OPC in Wisconsin. I may look around some more just to see if there is a "better" one.

Tommorow is the first day of classes. Cultural Heritage of the West II at 10, European History at 12, and Political Theory at 3.

Day One

This has been a pretty busy day. I'm pretty tired right now. My plan is to go to an OPC church in the morning with a few other guys. I'm debating whether or not to drop a class before classes even begin. I have 17 hours, but my stack of textbooks is huge. I don't want to spend every waking moment in class or studying. I want to keep some free time for other activities. I hate to do it, but I think it might be necessary. Today went well. The campus is extremely scenic. Well, I'm getting ready for bed. Very tired.

The Purpose of the Blog

This blog was created to let everyone know what's going on with Mark out at Covenant. God willing I will post here fairly often; it all depends on how busy I get and how often I remember.

Anyone may respond to a post by clicking on the "comments" tab beneath each entry. That will lead you to another tab which says something like "post comment".
